Hiking Anthony’s Nose Trail

It was the perfect day to go for a hike and we chose Anthony’s Nose trail. Well, someone chose it, someone else drove there, and we both hiked it. Our plan afterwords was to have a hot dog from Doggology. Well, let’s just say no one looked whether they were open. Nope, they were not open on a Tuesday, (or Monday)!

Hiking Anthony’s Nose Trail

After crossing the Bear Mountain Bridge (Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge) we drove another 1.3 miles right and parked on the left side. The parking spot is small and there were already four cars there. While we were wondering where to park, or how, a person left. Since the other cars were parked sideways there was only enough space for four cars to park without being stuck in. If there were no cars there I would have parked straight in towards the line of rocks. Anyway, off to the hike.

From the parking lot we turned left and started the hike. I wasn’t paying attention and kept walking instead of crossing the stream. A minute later we had to turn around because there were no trail marks. That’s what I get for following foot steps on the wet ground.

Once we were back on the trail, it was smooth sailing. The trail had a good incline but was clear from snow and ice. Some sections were wet but as you got higher up the trail, it was dryer. The trail was rocky with no rock scrambling, that I remember. Since the hike was very short, we took our time getting to the peak. We stoped and enjoyed all the open views.

Before we knew it, we were at Anthony’s Nose. Since the view was limited here we continued a little further for the scenic  overlook. There, we sat down to eat a snack and enjoy the view of the Bear Mountain Bridge, the zoo, Hudson River, and beautiful surrounding landscapes. There was only one other couple there when we arrived. When we were leaving there were a lot more people with us. As we were going back down to our car, we saw two more pairs of hikers going up.

Perfect Short Hike in Hudson Highlands

Descending Anthony’s Nose trail back to our car was a breeze. The knees were crying a bit but they did amazing and pulled through. It’s always faster going down, even with bad knees and ankles. Next thing I knew, we were seeing traffic and our waiting car. Since our lunch plans were ruined, we decided to go home and have empanadas and fries instead.

Overall, the short hike was about 2.8 miles roundtrip, with some extra steps and turns. If you’re taller, then it will tell you something else. I loved this hike because it was moderate and had my heart pumping again. This trail also had plenty of straight sections in between the inclines so not a continuous incline. Since it’s a short hike, either plan another hike or outing so you can enjoy the area more. Nearby you have the Bear Mountain Zoo and Fort Montgomery. You can walk from the zoo to Fort Montgomery and enjoy learning about some incredible history.
